San Diego, Calif. - Long Beach State's strong start in San Diego took a slight detour as UCF pushed across one run in the second, third, and fourth on the way to a 3-0 loss Friday afternoon.
Long Beach State (14-4) ultimately wasn't able to solve Alea White, as the UCF (10-7) pitcher worked out of a pair of jams to earn her seventh win of the season.
The best opportunity for the Beach came in the second inning. Jessica Flores hit a one-out double, and Gracye Majam was hit to put two runners on. A walk to Lauren MacLeod loaded the bases, but White was able to strike out Torres, one of just two on the day, and a Nichole Fry groundout ended the threat.
UCF took the lead in the bottom half, as Kaitlyn Jensen hit a solo home run off of Devyn Magnett. Scoring an unearned run in the third inning, Jensen struck again, hitting a second solo home run to make the score 3-0.
Cielo Meza came on in relief for the Beach, striking out five in three innings, but despite putting two runners on in the seventh, Long Beach State was never able to get on the board and took their fourth loss of the season.
Long Beach State closes the San Diego Classic with two games tomorrow. First, Long Beach State will face No. 21 Minnesota at 11:30 a.m. before playing Oregon State at 4:30 p.m.
