DAVIS, Calif. -- Long Beach State came up short at UC Davis on Thursday evening, as the Beach dropped a 79-49 decision to the Aggies. Despite the loss, LBSU had a pair of double-figure scorers in Cecily Wilson and Shanaijah Davison.
With the loss, the Beach drop to 3-22 on year and 1-9 in Big West action, while the Aggies improve to 21-4 overall and 11-1 in league play.
Wilson led all scorers with a 17-point performance, while adding eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. She played a solid all-around game to lead the Beach. Also reaching double-figures for LBSU was Davison who added 12 points in the game.
Freshman Emma Merriweather cleaned up the glass as she recorded 10 rebounds to lead the Beach.
LBSU opened the game with 5-0 lead, but a 10-0 UC Davis run put the Aggies up 10-5 at the media timeout. Wilson tallied seven points to close out the first quarter and cut the Aggies' lead down to two (14-12).
Wilson opened the second quarter with her ninth straight point to tie the game at 14-14. However, UC Davis would regain the lead 18-16, before Naomi Hunt gave Long Beach State a 19-18 edge with a three. The Beach lead would not last long as the Aggies would go on a 9-0 run to take a 27-19 advantage. Davison's three at 2:33 ended the Beach's scoring drought, but Long Beach State would go into halftime down 31-23.
Coming back from halftime, Long Beach State got off to a slow start as the Beach were held to just four points in the opening five minutes of action. UC Davis capitalized and led by as many as 18 points (41-23) in the frame, before the Beach cut the deficit down to 13 (50-37) before moving to the fourth quarter.
In the final 10 minutes of action, the Aggies shot 83.3 percent and connected on 10-of-12 field goals en route to scoring 29 points in the frame. Meanwhile, the Beach were held to just 25.0 percent on 3-of-12 shooting as UC Davis handed Long Beach State a 79-49 loss.
UC Davis boasted four double-figure scorers led by Nina Bessolo's 13 point effort. Morgan Bertsch added 12 points, while Pele Gianotti finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. Cierra Hall recorded 10 points for the Aggies.
Long Beach State will return to the Walter Pyramid on Saturday, Feb. 17 when the Beach host Cal State Fullerton at 4 p.m.
