Top-Ranked Long Beach State Wins in Straight Sets Over Alberta in Exhibition Match

LONG BEACH, Calif. – On the second day of the North American Challenge, Long Beach State emerged victorious over Alberta as the Beach picked up a 3-0 [25-12, 25-15, 25-20] exhibition win Sunday night.
LBSU hit .460 in a dominating win over Alberta in a tune up for the 2019 season. The Beach offense was led by senior setter Josh Tuaniga who dished out 31 assists which contributed to 38 kills. Seniors TJ DeFalco and Kyle Ensing led the attack as DeFalco finished the match with 11 kills and Ensing added nine. Meanwhile, sophomores Simon Andersen and Ethan Siegfried each contributed seven kills.
Andersen was also solid at the net as he posted a team-leading five block assists to keep the Golden Bears guessing. In addition to stout blocking defense, the Beach were led in back row by senior libero Jordan Molina who distributed 10 digs throughout the contest.
Long Beach State held the edge from the service line as the Beach tallied seven aces, while Alberta was unable to muster an ace on the night.
The first set saw the Beach hit a hot .588 (12-2-17), while limiting the Golden Bears to a .000 (7-7-23) attack percentage. With the strong offensive showing, LBSU used several runs to jump out in front by double digits (18-8), before cruising to a 25-12 win.
The Beach continued to roll past the Golden Bears in the second set as they hit .417 to Alberta's .190. Another dominating offensive output led to a 25-16 victory as Long Beach State took a 2-0 set lead into the third game.
Alberta battled in the third set and hit .318, however, Long Beach State knocked down 13 kills on 22 swings while committing just four attack errors to hit .409 in the frame. The game was close early on as the two teams found themselves deadlock five times. But LBSU took advantage of back-to-back miscues by Alberta to take an 8-6 lead. From there, the Beach led the rest of the way and claimed the third set by a score of 25-20 to complete the sweep.
The North American Challenge will conclude on Monday with four matches. Long Beach State will play Alberta at 9 a.m., before UC Santa Barbara takes on McMaster at noon and Alberta at 2 p.m. The Beach close out the exhibition tournament against McMaster at 5 p.m.
Long Beach State opens the season at the UCSB Asics Invitational on Jan. 3 when they play No.1 4 Grand Canyon.
