Long Beach State Baseball has added Zack Domingues (Volunteer Assistant Coach) and Ryan Day (Director of Baseball Operations) to head coach Troy Buckley’s staff.
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Dirtbags head coach Troy Buckley has announced two additions to his staff, as former Dirtbag Zack Domingues has moved into his new role as the Volunteer Assistant Coach and Ryan Day has joined the staff as the Director of Baseball Operations.
Domingues takes over for another former Dirtbag, Zach Miller, who spent the past three seasons as the volunteer assistant. Since finishing his playing career in 2016, Domingues has been working with the team as a graduate assistant while earning his Master's degree in Coaching & Student-Athlete Development at Long Beach State.
On the diamond, Domingues played three seasons with the Dirtbags from 2014-16 as a versatile infielder. He started 123 games for Long Beach State playing primarily at second base and third base, and helped the Dirtbags reach NCAA Regionals in 2014 and 2016. The Visalia, Calif. native had a breakout year as a senior, hitting .294 with a team-leading .422 on-base percentage and an impressive 22 sacrifice bunts. He led the team with 33 walks and eight hit-by-pitches, and tied for second on the team with 35 runs scored that season as the primary third baseman.
"We are excited to have Zack back on our staff as he transitions to this new role," said Buckley of his former player. "He understands our culture, has always been highly respected by his peers and has been part of this family since his arrival in the fall of 2013. He has and will continue to be a great addition to our program."
Day brings coaching experience of his own to the Dirtbags, after spending the last six seasons on staff at his alma mater, Concordia University in Irvine. Day played two seasons with the Eagles, primarily as a relief pitcher, and was part of the program's first ever NAIA National Championship team in 2011. Prior to his time at Concordia, Day was a catcher and outfielder at Fullerton College.
After graduating from Concordia in 2011, Day immediately jumped into coaching by joining the staff at Tustin High School as a pitching coach in 2012. The next year he returned to Concordia where, in addition to serving as the pitching coach, he was also the Assistant Recruiting Coordinator, Camp Coordinator and Alumni Coordinator. Day earned his Bachelor's in Communications in 2011 at Concordia and went back to earn his Master's in Coaching & Athletic Administration in 2014.
"We would like to welcome Ryan's addition to our program as our new Director of Operations," Buckley said. "Ryan brings a passion and work ethic that will certainly aid us in his area of job responsibilities. Being a former collegiate coach is of great value and we are looking forward to his input."
