A pair of hat tricks and two overtimes put the Beach over the Tigers on Friday night, 14-13.

STOCKTON, Calif. – No. 8 Long Beach State entered Stockton, Calif. looking to upset the No. 5 team in the nation, and after a double overtime thriller they did just that. Long Beach State (8-11, 1-2 GCC) overpowered Pacific (10-10, 3-1 GCC) with a score of 14-13, behind a pair of hat tricks from senior Max Cusator and freshman Theodoros Pateros.

The game opened up on a defensive stall between both sides with the first score not coming until the 3:08 mark, where junior Luke Ritter put the Beach up 1-0. Pacific would tie the game up shortly after, but the Beach would notch two more goals to lead at the end of one by a score of 3-1. The Tigers would come out hot in the second quarter to tie the game up at 3-3, but LBSU would command a charge and score three unanswered goals. The Beach and the Tigers would go back and forth trading a goal before the end of half to leave them with a 7-4 lead.

Pateros would open up the second half for the Beach with a goal at the 6:36 mark putting LBSU up 8-4. Pacific would outscore the Beach 3-2 in the third quarter to inch their way back into the game and cut the lead to two with the score at 9-7 at the end of three.

The No. 5 team in the nation would come out hot in the fourth period scoring three straight goals to take their first lead of the night at 11-10. Pacific would tie the game back up at 12-12 followed by junior Austin Stewart scoring a go-ahead goal with 1:39 left in the match. The Beach appeared to be leaving the game victorious, but the Tigers would respond with 30 seconds left in the game to tie it up and send it into overtime.

In OT, freshman Garrett Zaan would score in the first period of overtime to give the Beach the lead at 13-12. Cusator would score the clinching goal in the second half of OT to put the Beach up by two. Pacific would score once more, but LBSU would escape with the victory.
