Long Beach State Hosts CSUN on Saturday Night
The Long Beach State women's volleyball team wraps up the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 17 when the Beach hosts CSUN at 7 p.m. inside the Walter Pyramid. Prior to the match, the Beach's four seniors in Gigi Alex, Emma Kirst, Megan Kruidhof, and Tyler Spriggs will be honored in a senior night ceremony.
About The Beach
• Long Beach State closes out the regular season with a 15-13 overall record and a 7-8 Big West Conference mark.
• The Beach went 2-0 last week as they picked up a pair of four-set wins at UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton.
• Long Beach State has been solid at the net all season averaging 2.32 blocks per set. On blocking defense, the Beach are led by Emma Kirst (1.06 blocks per set) and YiZhi Xue (1.01 blocks per set).
• Senior Tyler Spriggs leads the Beach offensively with 2.99 kills per set which ranks her in the top 10 in the Big West.
• Carly Aigner-Swesey and Mina Andjelkovic split setter duties. Aigner-Swesey averages 8.47 assists per set, while Andjelkovic averages 5.05.
• Defensively, junior Hailey Harward leads the way in the back row with 358 total digs for an average of 3.35 per set.
• Harward is also the team's leader in service aces as she has racked up 41 on the year for an average of 0.38 per set. Her 41 aces rank her 41st in the nation.

Scouting the Matadors
• CSUN comes into the match at Long Beach State with an 8-19 overall record. The Matadors are 4-11 in Big West play.
• The Matadors went 1-1 last week with a four-set win over Cal State Fullerton and a five-set loss at UC Riverside.
• CSUN is led offensively by Aeryn Owens who owns 4.18 kills per set on .263 hitting. She also adds 2.21 digs per set and 0.42 blocks per set.
• At setter, the Matadors platoon Kamalu Makekau-Whittaker (4.91 assists per set), Hannah Merjil (4.76 assists per set), and Erin Indermill (4.15 assists per set).
• The Matadors' libero is Kristey Markle. Markle has amassed 401 total digs for an average of 3.86 digs per set.
Series vs. CSUN
Long Beach State and CSUN will meet for the 52nd time in program history. In the all-time series, the Beach hold the lead 47-4 and have won the last 14 meetings. Most recently, Long Beach State picked up a 3-2 victory over CSUN on Sept. 22 during the first week of conference action.
Big West Honors
Earlier this week, Long Beach State saw two players pick up Big West Conference recognition as senior Tyler Spriggs was named Player of the Week and junior Hailey Harward earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Spriggs picked up her first conference weekly award as she led the Beach's offense last week. The 6-foot-1 outside hitter posted back-to-back 21-kill performances in consecutive four-set road wins over UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton. She hit .400 on the week with 42 kills on 95 swings, while committing just four errors. Additionally, Spriggs contributed 18 digs and seven blocks.
The native of Los Angeles, Calif., averaged 5.25 kills per set and 2.25 digs per set last week. Spriggs collected eight digs against the Highlanders, then notched her fifth double-double of the season with 10 digs against the Titans.
Harward collected her fourth career Defensive Player of the Week award and first of the 2018 season as she led the Long Beach State defense with a pair of 20-dig efforts. She averaged 6.13 digs per set as she tallied 23 digs against UCR, then came back and registered a season-high 26 digs at Cal State Fullerton.
The product out of Phoenix, Ariz., finished the week with 49 digs, while adding four aces and nine assists.
A Grand Time
On October 19 against UC Santa Barbara, junior Hailey Harward collected a season-high 24 digs and surpassed the 1,000-career dig milestone. The product out of Phoenix, Ariz., led the Long Beach State defense as she paced the back row. Harward has been solid on both sides of the ball beginning her career at LBSU as a defensive specialist and libero, then transitioning into an outside hitter role a year ago. Thus far, Harward has amassed 1,129 career digs.
Block Party
Long Beach State has been solid all season long at the net. As a team, the Beach rank second in the Big West with 2.32 blocks per set. Leading the way on blocking defense are the Beach duo of Emma Kirst and YiZhi Xue. Kirst is the team leader with 1.06 blocks per set, which is good for third in the league, while Xue's 1.01 blocks per set rank her sixth in the conference.
Youth Movement
With seven freshmen on the roster Long Beach State has seen several rookies step up and perform this season. Kashauna Williams is second on the team in scoring with 2.64 kills per set, while Carly Aigner-Swesey has paced the offense with 8.47 assists per set. Defensively, Carly Hill is second on the team with 3.25 digs per set. Allison Martinez and Dylan Dela Cruz have come off the bench and produced for the Beach as Martinez's .268 attack percentage is tied for second on the squad and Dela Cruz contributes 1.77 digs per set and 0.79 assists per set.
Aces Wild
Junior Hailey Harward has been on fire from the service line all season. Harward has racked up a team-leading 41 aces thus far for an average of 0.38 which ranks her third in the league. Additionally, her total aces rank her in the top 50 in the nation. Earlier this season, Harward racked up a career-high seven aces in Long Beach State's five-set win over Texas Tech. Her seven aces tie her for third in the LBSU single-game record book.
Big West Freshmen of the Week
Long Beach State has boasted a pair of Big West Conference Freshmen of the Week in Allison Martinez and Kashauna Williams.
Martinez picked up in honors in September after finishing the week with 18 kills, five blocks, and three digs, while hitting .577 (18-3-26). She had a breakout performance against Fresno State as she hit an impressive .733 after knocking down 12 kills on 15 swings with just one attack error.
Williams was named Big West Freshman of the Week in October after posting an all-around solid performance with 2.58 kills, 083 digs, and 0.75 blocks per set. She recorded a pair of double-figure kill efforts in two of three of the Beach's contests and tied her season-high with 15 kills against UC Santa Barbara.
