Beach Men’s Golf Finishes Fourth at Pacific Invitational

Junior Hunter Epson fired a 5-under round of 66 on Saturday to lead the Beach to a fourth-place finish. Senior Joe Fryer finished in fourth on the player leaderboard, shooting 10-under for the tournament.
STOCKTON, Calif. -- Long Beach State wrapped up a successful Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational on Saturday at Stockton Country Club, finishing in fourth place with a team score of 835 (-17) for the tournament. Senior Joe Fryer was LBSU's top performer, finishing in fourth to earn his 10th career Top 5 finish. He was 2-under on Saturday with a round of 69 to finish at 10-under for the weekend.
Junior Hunter Epson was Long Beach State's top scorer on Saturday, shooting a 5-under 66 to conclude a solid tournament in a tie for 14th. Epson's 66 is a new career high for the Long Beach native and he only got stronger as the weekend went on, taking three shots off his first-round score to shoot a 70 on Friday before going four shots better in his final round. His last 18 was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 16th, helping him to a 4-under back nine on Saturday.
Senior Patrick Pockels was a model of consistency in Stockton, shooting three straight 1-under rounds of 70 to finish in a tie for 19th place.
Long Beach State's fourth-place finish represents its best of the season, and a fourth straight Top 10 finish to begin the campaign. Furthermore, two of the three teams ahead of the Beach on the leaderboard are nationally ranked: No. 16 BYU in second place and No. 40 Nevada winning the team title.
This wraps up the 2018 competition calendar for men's golf, but the Beach will return to action in 2019 at the Arizona Intercollegiate, Jan. 28-29 at the Sawailo Golf Club in Tucson.
