Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State couldn't get the bats going against Katie Kibby of UC Davis, as the Beach lost 5-0 to close the series with the Aggies on Sunday.
Kibby held Long Beach State (16-20-1, 4-2 Big West) to just one hit, as the series theme of tremendous pitching continued after the Beach threw back-to-back complete game shutouts on Saturday.
UC Davis (17-21, 2-4) took an early lead in the first, as Christa Castello opened the game with a base hit, and then came around to score on an RBI double from Alexis Carney.
The Aggies then tacked on an additional run in the third inning. UC Davis was able to load the bases with two outs, and while a base hit from Maddie Rojas brought home one run, a strong throw from Hannah Cookson in left field kept the score at 2-0 by cutting down Brianna Warner at the plate.
Aniesa Maulupe led off the fifth inning with a single in the best opportunity for the Beach. The Aggies picked up two outs, but then LT Torres was hit by a pitch to put the tying run on base and bring up the top of the order. UC Davis was able to get out of the inning on a groundout to third base, and LBSU had just one baserunner the rest of the game.
Long Beach State will now hit the road for the first time in conference play, facing Cal Poly for a three-game series beginning with a single game on Friday. The Beach will enter next week tied for first place in the Big West.
