LONG BEACH, Calif. - Four days after winning the Off the Block's National Blocker of the Year, Amir Lugo-Rodriguez has won the 2017 Ryan Millar Award, which is presented to the nation's top middle attacker. Off the Block made the announcement Friday morning.
Lugo-Rodriguez edged out his competition by earning one more vote to take home the national award which is named for Ryan Millar, the former BYU All-American and U.S. Olympian. The award is presented to the nation's best middle attacker in NCAA Division I-II men's volleyball during the regular season.
The product out of South Pasadena, Calif., led the MPSF and was second in the nation with 1.26 blocks per set at the conclusion of the regular season. He also hit .500 in 17 matches as he went on to earn All-MPSF honors.
Lugo-Rodriguez was a key component to Long Beach State's success in the MPSF Tournament as he helped the Beach capture their first-ever MPSF Championship with 18 blocks (2.25 blocks per set) in three postseason matches. With Lugo-Rodriguez patrolling the net, the Beach clinched an NCAA Tournament berth for the second-straight season.
Heading into the NCAA Tournament, Lugo-Rodriguez leads the nation with 1.30 blocks per set and owns a hitting percentage of .494, which leads Long Beach State.
