LBSU Suffers 6-2 Loss to San Diego State

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Dirtbags couldn't quite get untracked on Tuesday night, falling to San Diego State, 6-2, at Blair Field. The visiting Aztecs (5-4) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never let Long Beach State (4-4) to get any closer the rest of the night.
Jarren Duran continued to hit the ball well at the top of the lineup, recording a pair of hits, a walk and a run scored. Catcher David Banuelos was also 2-for-4 on the night.
Freshman John Castro made the start for Long Beach State, and fared well despite a two-run, two-out rally for SDSU in the first inning. Castro threw 5.0 innings, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) with no walks and three strikeouts. An Andrew Brown solo home run in the fifth inning was the only run Castro allowed after the first frame.
The Dirtbags scratched a run back in the fifth when Banuelos scored on a throwing error. Duran successfully stole second base following an infield hit, and when the ball bounced into center field on the throw down, Banuelos was able to score easily to make it 3-1 SDSU.
The eighth inning represented the best chance for a comeback as LBSU was able to send the tying run to the plate. Consecutive singles by Duran and Daniel Jackson, followed by a hit-by-pitch on Rasmussen, loaded the bases with nobody out. After a pair of strikeouts, Ramsey Romano beat out an infield single to shortstop to make it a 6-2 game, but a groundout ended the threat with just one run coming across.
Long Beach State will play an exhibition game tomorrow night against a professional team from South Korea, KT Wiz Baseball Club. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Blair Field, and it will be the last chance for fans to see the Dirtbags for a few weeks. LBSU will hit then the road for weekend series at No. 7 North Carolina (Mar. 3-5) and Arizona State (Mar. 10-12).
