Long Beach State Suffers Loss at San Diego

SAN DIEGO – Long Beach State suffered its fifth-straight loss as cold-shooting hampered the Beach in a 74-40 loss at San Diego on Wednesday evening at Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Junior guard Martina McCowan led Long Beach State (0-5) with 12 points, eight rebounds and a career-high six steals in the loss. She also added an assist and a block in the game. Freshman guard Shanaijah Davison recorded her fourth-career double-figure showing with a 10-point performance, while adding three steals, two assists and two rebounds. Rookies Emma Merriweather and Naomi Hunt added seven and six points, respectively, in the contest.
The Beach finished the game shooting only 26.6 percent (17-for-64) from the field and were limited to just 2-of-23 from long distance. For the second straight game, Long Beach State was unable to get to the free throw line as the Beach went to the line just six times, while San Diego (4-1) was 12-for-16 from the charity stripe.
Despite the offensive struggles, Long Beach State kept the game close in the first half as its defense limited San Diego to just 18.8 percent (3-for-16) in the first quarter. The Beach defense continued to hold the Toreros to limited offense in the second quarter as USD shot just 28.6 percent from the field, while LBSU connected on 5-of-13 for a 38.5 shooting percentage – its highest shooting percentage of the contest. The two teams matched each other point-for-point in the second quarter as the Beach went into the locker room at halftime down 24-19.
Down by five going into the second half, the Beach's offense was stymied by the Toreros as LBSU was held to just six points in the third quarter. San Diego broke the game open in the third as it outscored Long Beach State 22-6 and limited the Beach to a mere 11.8 percent (2-for-17) from the field.
The Beach's offense struggled into the fourth quarter as they were outscored 28-15, and held to just 28.6 percent shooting (6-for-21). San Diego, meanwhile, shot 64.7 percent (22-for-34) in the second half as the Toreros cruised to a 74-40 victory.
Sydney Williams led all scorers with 18 points, while Maya Hood notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds for San Diego.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Tuesday, November 28, when it takes on Arizona in Tucson at 6 p.m.
