Action Resumes for Beach Tennis in Las Vegas

Las Vegas, Nev. - The Beach continued play at the UNLV Invitational on Saturday, earning a pair of wins in singles and in doubles heading into Sunday's final day of action. The biggest win of the day came in the doubles draw from the veteran tandem of Maeva Razakasoa and Julie Gerard. The pair of seniors picked up a strong 8-2 victory over Victoria Matejevic and Melissa Ates from Washington State, advancing to the finals of the No. 2 doubles flight.
After Razakasoa was 2-0 on day one of the competition, it was Gerard who had a 2-0 day on Saturday. The senior topped South Alabama's Monica Mitta with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-1 victory to move into the consolation final at No. 2 singles. Razakasoa came up short against a ranked opponent, losing 6-2, 6-2 against USC's Jessica Failla in the top flight singles semifinals. Hayley Thompson also fell to a ranked opponent in the No. 2 singles semifinals, falling 6-3, 7-5 to No. 103 Carol Yang of UNLV.
At No. 3 singles, junior Lena Pacholski scored her first victory for Long Beach State, defeating Matejevic 6-3, 7-6.
It was a clean sweep for the 49ers in the No. 2 doubles draw as Laura Eales and Maren Helgo joined Razakasoa/Gerard in the win column. The senior/freshman combo topped Mercedes Lopez and Cristina Moroi of UNLV, also by an 8-2 margin. That means that on Sunday morning, the Beach will have teams competing in the No. 2 doubles final and consolation final simultaneously.
Sunday is the final day of action at the UNLV Invitational, starting with doubles play at 10 a.m.
