Beach Tennis Opens Play at UNLV Invitational

Las Vegas, Nev. - Beach Tennis began its fall season at the UNLV Invitational on Friday, playing 12 matches across singles and doubles action. Senior Maeva Razakasoa had a 2-0 day to lead the Beach, winning her match at No. 1 singles and at No. 2 doubles.
Razakasoa, who is currently ranked No. 71 in the nation, defeated Aiwen Zhu of UNLV 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals of the top singles draw. At doubles, Razakasoa teamed with fellow senior Julie Gerard to top Laura Matuskova and Monica Mitta of South Alabama, 8-4.
Senior Hayley Thompson won her match at No. 2 singles, taking down Galina Bykova of Fresno State, 6-4, 6-4. At No. 4 singles, freshman Maren Helgo earned her first collegiate victory with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Laura Matuskova from South Alabama. Lena Pacholski and Estee Widdershoven each made their Long Beach State debuts on Friday as well, but came up short in their matches and will look to bounce back tomorrow.
Friday's winners advance to the semifinals of each respective bracket on Saturday, while players or pairs that lost their matches head to the consolation bracket.
Razakasoa will face No. 97-ranked Jessica Failla of USC in the No. 1 singles semifinals, Thompson will play No. 103 Carol Yang of UNLV in her semifinal matchup, and Helgo will go up against Angela Kulikov of USC in the Flight No. 4 semifinal. Meanwhile in the doubles semifinals, Razakasoa and Gerard will face Victoria Matejevic and Melisa Ates of Washington State.
Doubles action goes first on Saturday at 10 a.m. followed by singles action thereafter.
