Brianna Viltz Highlights LBSU's First Day at Triton Invitational

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Long Beach State kicked off the Triton Invitational with the hammer throw, discus and pole vault Friday at UC San Diego's Triton Track & Field Stadium.
Senior Brianna Viltz highlighted the afternoon with a huge lifetime best of 166-04 in the discus to finish fifth among collegiate athletes and eighth overall in the open section. She shattered her previous PR by over nine feet, which vaulted her into the LBSU all-time top-10 at No. 5.
Senior Fatima Vergara was Long Beach State's top finisher in the hammer throw as she advanced to the finals with a toss of 189-09. That mark would stand as her best of the day, putting her fourth among collegiate athletes and ninth overall. Senior Marina Shelton added a 14th-place showing (183-09).
Sophomore Kennedy Krueger tied for eighth in the women's pole vault open section, clearing 11-11.75. Sophomore Jessica Henslee also tied for 11th with a height of 11-05.75, while redshirt freshman Lea Fong tied for 14th (11-05.75).
Sophomore Dustin Wert was the runner-up in the men's pole vault open section, reaching 15-11. Junior Bo Haddock wasn't far behind in third at 15-05.
Long Beach State continues action at the Triton Invitational on Saturday, April 23. The men's hammer throw starts a full day of events at 9:30 a.m.
