San Diego, Calif. -
Julia Lombardi's solo home run in the second gave the Beach the lead, and then the 49ers broke the game open in the seventh inning in support of a tremendous effort from Christina Clermont as Long Beach State opened up their final tournament of the preseason with a 6-0 win over BYU.
Christina Clermont went the distance, striking out 10 and scattering a pair of hits to improve to 10-2 on the year.
Julia Lombardi gave Long Beach State the lead in the second inning, as the game proved to belong to the pitchers through the first six innings. Lombardi's solo home run was the only score of the game until the final frame, as McKenna Bull allowed five hits and the lone run through six for BYU (16-11)
Long Beach State (16-9) finally opened up the lead in the seventh inning. Nichole Fry led off the inning with a single, and a bunt single from Hannah Cookson put two runners on. Another infield single loaded the bases for the top of the order for the Beach.
LT Torres kicked off the scoring with an RBI single, and then with the bases loaded, a throw to the plate on a grounder sailed wide bringing home one more run. A sacrifice fly brought home Alley Perkins, and then Lombardi wrapped up the inning with another big hit, driving home a pair with a single to left field.
Action in San Diego continues this afternoon as Long Beach State faces Ohio State.
