SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The fourth-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team concluded the UCSB Asics Invitational with a 3-1 victory over Quincy University Saturday evening at Rob Gym. Set scores were 25-16, 23-25, 25-19, 25-22.
The Beach went undefeated at the UCSB Asics Invitational for the third year in a row as it swept Lindenwood and Sacred Heart on Friday.
Freshman Kyle Ensing paced the 49ers with 17 kills and 10 digs. He also finished with two aces and hit .419 on the night. Classmate TJ DeFalco matched Ensing with 17 kills, while adding six digs and three block assists.
Senior Taylor Gregory was nearly perfect with eight kills and no errors on nine swings (.889). Freshman Josh Tuaniga led the offense to a .340 attack percentage with 46 assists.
Long Beach State (3-0) scored the first two points of the opening set, but Quincy was able to keep it close until the Beach went on an 8-2 run to pull ahead, 12-6. LBSU stayed out front and took a 20-12 lead on a kill from Ensing. The 49ers cruised the rest of the way to the 25-16 victory.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair with seven ties and four lead changes. The Beach held an 11-9 advantage before the Hawks proceeded to score five unanswered to go up, 14-11. LBSU called a timeout and then sided out with a kill from junior Bryce Yould. Quincy was able to keep the slight edge until a double block by Gregory and Ensing evened the playing field at 15-all. The 49ers would tie it up again at 17-17, but QU made a late push, pulling ahead 23-19. Long Beach State came back with a 4-1 run before a service error ended it at 25-23.
LBSU regrouped in the third frame as it raced out to a 14-8 lead after a kill by junior Eric Ensing. The Beach continued to roll and back-to-back kills from DeFalco increased the cushion to 18-11. The 49ers were never threatened from there as a Kyle Ensing kill gave them the 25-19 win.
Long Beach State took another early lead in set four, going up 8-4 on a Quincy hitting error. The Hawks pulled within two at 12-10 before the Beach used a 6-2 spurt, capped by a DeFalco kill, to go on top, 18-12. QU eventually knotted the score at 20-20, but LBSU scored five of the next seven points for the 25-22 win.
Quincy (0-3) had four players finish with eight kills, including Jarrod Kelso, who also hit .316 and finished with five blocks.
Long Beach State will begin MPSF play next weekend when it hosts Cal Baptist in its home opener on Friday, Jan. 15. The Beach is also set to entertain No. 12 USC on Saturday, Jan. 16. First serve for both matches is 7 p.m.
