SEATTLE, Wash. - The men's throwers highlighted Long Beach State's final day of competition at the UW Invitational as they claimed the top-three spots in the weight throw Saturday at Dempsey Indoor.
"It's early for us and being our first meet of the season, we expect some hiccups and performances that are short of our expectations," head coach Andy Sythe said. "We had several good performances here and there, but we work to prepare for a team effort and these past two days we came up short. It won't take this team long to work back to better performances later. We did not lack effort or desire so I am happy that in that respect, we are on the right track."
Senior Kody Robison had one of the top performances as he won the weight throw with a personal-record 63-09.75, while junior transfer James Hubbard was the runner-up at 61-02.25. Junior Robert Marlow completed the trifecta as he notched a lifetime-best 61-01.25. The trio now ranks third, fourth and fifth in school history. Prior to today, only three 49ers had surpassed the 60-foot mark. Jon O'Neil established a school-record 66-11.25 in 2002, while Colin Dunbar (65-00.75) accomplished the feat in 2011 and Robert Jennings (64-10.75) in 2006.
Marlow added a personal-best 49-07.25 to place fifth in his flight and 16th overall in the shot put.
Senior Willie Alexander paced a trio of 49ers in the men's long jump, placing sixth at 23-02.75. Freshman John Broadhead added a top-20 performance at 20-08.5, while sophomore Herman Day was 25th (19-04.75).
Day qualified for the 60m hurdle semifinals as he came in 11th overall with a personal-record 8.72 in the preliminary round. He ended up bettering his time in the semifinals at 8.70, but did not advance to the finals. Day also tied for eighth in the high jump (6-02.75).
The men's 4x400 relay team of Kemonie Briggs, Dylan McCloskey, Daniel York-Mouton and Ryan Colebrook, took third in 3:14.7, the fifth-fastest time in school history.
In the 400m, Briggs finished ahead of the pack in Section 1 (11th overall) at 49.23 seconds, while York-Mouton came in 14th (49.3).
On the women's side, freshman Courtne' Davis recorded the sixth-best 60m time in program history, clocking in at 7.67 seconds to win her heat and advance out of the preliminary round. She then bettered her mark in the semifinals (7.63) and finals (7.62), where she finished sixth overall. Davis also moved up to No. 5 on the LBSU all-time charts. Sophomore Whitney Knox placed 20th in the prelims with a time of 7.85, which ranks ninth in school history.
Sophomore Hollie Harris won Section 2 of the women's 400m (15th overall), crossing the finish line in a personal-best 57.68. That puts her at No. 10 in the Long Beach State record books. Senior Brianna Wilson was also among the top-three in her section at 58.11.
Harris, Davis, Wilson and Natalie O'Dwyer concluded the day by combining for a time of 3:55.93 in the 4x400 relay, putting them at No. 8 on the 49er all-time charts.
Senior Aundrea Yancy led the Beach in the women's high jump as she tied for fifth at 5-05. Junior Riley Cooks also had a top-20 showing, clearing 5-01, while adding a lifetime-best 17-00 in the long jump (15th).
Seniors Brianna Viltz and Fatima Vergara contributed a couple of top-10 finishes in the shot put. Viltz was sixth overall and now ranks fourth in program history with a mark of 46-02.75, while Vergara came in ninth with a toss of 44-10.25 (8th all-time).
Long Beach State will take a week off from competition before returning to Seattle, Wash., for the Husky Classic (Feb. 12-13) and the UW Indoor Open (Feb. 14).
