Long Beach, Calif. - Day one of the Beach Tennis Winter Classic couldn't have gone much better for the hosts on a gloomy Friday at Rhodes Tennis Center. The Beach went unbeaten in singles action against Denver and earned wins in the top two doubles matches with Oregon.
"We had a very strong start to our spring season today," said Long Beach State head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello after the matches. "We played like we have practiced the last two weeks and we executed our games plans very well."
Maeva Razakasoa scored the biggest win of the day when she topped No. 62 Julia O'Loughlin of Denver in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) at court No. 1. But she had plenty of company in the win column as the entire LBSU roster earned a win on Friday in singles play, never needing a third set to achieve it.
Ella Monsey was the quickest winner, dispatching CSUN's Lisa Nosenko while dropping just one game, 6-0, 6-1. Ebba Unden was dominant throughout at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Maureen Slattery of Denver. Alex Jones was strong in her first competitive action of the preseason, winning 6-3, 6-0 over Arpe Bagumyan of CSUN. Julie Gerard played the closest match of the afternoon, but still won 6-3, 7-6 (1) over Denver's Bianca Monk.
The day started with the top two Beach pairs earning doubles victories, including a win over a nationally-ranked opponent at No. 2. Thompson and Eales combined for a convincing 6-1 win over the No. 59 doubles team in the country, Oregon's Kennan Johnson and Shweta Sangwan. The Beach's top doubles pair of Razakasoa and Gerard then secured a 6-4 victory over Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita.
Action resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. when Long Beach matches up with Denver in doubles play and then meets up with a familiar opponent, CSUN, for a full slate of singles matches.
