LONG BEACH - Long Beach State head men's volleyball coach Alan Knipe has released the 49ers' schedule for the 2015-16 season.
After playing two exhibition matches at Alberta (Canada), the Beach will officially begin the season by heading to Santa Barbara to participate in the UCSB/Asics Invitational for the 13th-straight year. The two-day tournament will take place from Jan. 8-9.
That will be LBSU's final tune-up before starting its 22-match MPSF conference slate at home against USC (Jan. 15) and Cal Baptist (Jan. 16). Long Beach State returns to the Walter Pyramid the following weekend to host BYU in back-to-back contests on Jan. 22 and 23. The 49ers then close out the month of January with road matches at UCLA and UC Santa Barbara.
In February, the Beach will host four matches, starting with Stanford (Feb. 5) and Pepperdine (Feb. 6). Following a short road trip to Cal Baptist and USC, LBSU welcomes defending MPSF champion UC Irvine to the Walter Pyramid on Feb. 19. It will then entertain UC San Diego on Feb. 20 before making its way to the Aloha State for a pair of matches at Hawai'i.
The Beach then opens the month of March with a two-week layoff from conference action, but it won't get a break from the tough competition. First, LBSU will make its way to perennial NCAA tournament participant Penn State for the first time since 2006. The two teams are set to square off on March 5 and 6 in University Park, Pa. Long Beach State then returns home to host the annual Asics Tournament where it will lock horns with 2015 NCAA runner-up Lewis (March 11) and Ohio State (March 12).
Long Beach State resumes its MPSF schedule the following week, taking on CSUN on the road (March 16) and at home (March 18). That kicks off LBSU's final homestand as it will also entertain UC Santa Barbara (March 23) and UCLA (March 26), prior to closing out the regular season with four-straight road contests.
