Long Beach, Calif. - Following a three-game sweep on the road at Cal Poly, Long Beach State garnered both Big West weekly honors, as LT Torres was named Big West Player of the Week and Christina Clermont earned her fourth Big West Pitcher of the Week award this season.
Torres, a freshman from Tracy, Calif., hit a team-leading .417 last week in the series at Cal Poly. Hitting safely in all three games, Torres' biggest hit came in game one, as the freshman hit her first collegiate home run, a two-run shot that lifted the 49ers into the lead and accounted for both runs in a 2-1 win.
Torres also drove in a run in the ninth inning of the second game of Saturday's double-header, assisting in a 7-4 win in extra innings. In the final game of the series, Torres went 3-for-4, scoring a run and finishing the weekend with a team high five hits.
Clermont was dominant in the circle for the 49ers, earning all three wins on the weekend, improving to 18-7 on the year and extending her Big West-leading 12 conference win total. Matching up against the reigning Big West Pitcher of the Year Sierra Hyland for most of the weekend, Clermont came out on the winning side three times, pitching 18.0 total innings in two starts and one relief appearance.
The Carlsbad, Calif. native started her week with a complete-game, 2-1 victory in a start matched up against Hyland.
Her best appearance of the weekend came in relief during game two of Saturday's doubleheader. Entering a tied 4-4 contest in the sixth inning, Clermont allowed just one hit in four scoreless inning of relief on the way to the win.
Returning to the circle as a starter, Clermont finished her ninth straight complete game, striking out a pair in Sunday's 8-3 win. On the weekend, Clermont held the Mustangs to .183 hitting and posted a 1.56 ERA, striking out eight.
The award was the first of the season for Torres, and marked the second time this season that a 49er player won Big West Player of the Week, joining Darian Tautalafua. For Clermont, it marked the fourth time this season she has won Big West Pitcher of the Week in her first season at Long Beach State.
Long Beach State closes the regular season this weekend, hosting UC Santa Barbara on campus for a three-game series.
