Beach Finishes Sweep At Cal Poly With 8-3 Win

San Luis Obispo, Calif. - Freshmen Hannah Cookson and LT Torres each finished with three hits, and Haley Tobler hit a three-run home run as Long Beach State finished off a sweep of Cal Poly with an 8-3 win on Sunday.
Cookson became the second freshman to hit her first home run on the weekend, giving the Beach an early lead in the second inning. After a leadoff walk to Lauren Lombardi, Cookson cracked a two-run shot to left field, giving the 49ers a 2-0 lead.
Cal Poly (22-30, 5-13 Big West) pulled back a run with a solo home run from Sierra Hyland in the bottom half, but Long Beach State (25-24, 12-6 Big West) answered back in the third.
Singles from Leilani Tupua-Tautalatasi and Haley Tobler started the inning, and an intentional walk to Darian Tautalafua loaded the bases for the Beach. A wild pitch brought home one run, and a sacrifice fly by Julia Lombardi made the score 4-1.
Another solo home run by the Mustangs, this time from Betsy Colburn, made the score 4-2 as the teams moved through the third inning.
Long Beach State added three more in the fourth, once again courtesy of the long ball. After Torres hit her second single of the day and a walk, Tobler cracked her third home run of the season to left center as the 49ers extended their lead to 7-2.
Cal Poly pulled back a run on an RBI double from Emily Ceccaci in the fifth, but that was the extent of the damage against Christina Clermont on the day.
Clermont went the distance for her ninth straight complete game, earning her 18th win of the year in the process.
Long Beach State closes out the 2015 season next weekend at home, hosting UC Santa Barbara for a three-game set. The team will play a doubleheader on Friday before honoring their six seniors prior to the final game of the series at 1 p.m. on Saturday. All three games will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
