DURHAM, N.C. -- Long Beach State sophomore Garrett Hampson has accepted an invitation to join the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.
Hampson will join the elite team as a training camp invitee with a chance to make the final 24-man roster, announced on June 25. He is the 11th Dirtbag to join the Collegiate National Team and the first since current major leaguer Danny Espinosa donned the red, white & blue in 2007.
The star shortstop out of Reno, Nev. enjoyed another strong season for Long Beach State, hitting .296 and leading the team with 38 runs scored. He also doubled his stolen base total from his freshman season with 18 stolen bases in 22 attempts in 2015, which also led the Dirtbags. He smacked nine doubles and had 17 RBI.
Over his first two seasons at Long Beach State, Hampson has started all of LBSU's 114 games at shortstop with a .303 career batting average. He was the Big West Freshman Field Player of the Year in 2014 and earned a spot on the All-Big West second team as a sophomore in 2015.
The Collegiate National Team reports to Cary, N.C. on June 18 before playing in its first game against the Holly Spring Salamanders of the Coastal Plain League on June 20. The summer features a 17-game schedule from June 20-July 8, including series against the national teams from Chinese Taipei and Cuba. All 17 games will be played in the U.S with the summer finale being played at the Americas Baseball Festival at the National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.
