RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Long Beach State men's track & field team won their third straight Big West title after coming back from a 33.5-point deficit in the first day of the Big West Championships. It is the first three-peat in school history and the first in the conference since former member Utah State (1994-96).
This win is the 49er's ninth overall Big West title, which is the most by any current member in the conference.
The men finished with 185 points after taking the lead over UC Santa Barbara in the triple jump with Ryan Sanders' win and Willie Alexander taking second. The men built on that lead by taking first and second in the discus and winning the final event of the meet, the 4x400m relay.
Although the women finished seventh with 52 points, there were some standout performances that cracked the LBSU All-Time Top 10 list.
Starting with the men, the 49ers were able to win six events for the Beach.
Michael Montgomery increased his lifetime best after winning the pole vault, moving up the All-Time Top 10 list. Montgomery's mark of 17-09 ranks him sixth overall in program history. Conner Rouse tied for second in the event (16-00.75), and Dustin Wert earned a season best 15-07.
