AUSTIN, Texas - Seniors Chris Low and Cameron Glasgow got the Long Beach State track & field team off to a strong start at the NCAA West Preliminary Championships Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

Low (800m) and Glasgow (400m) both finished among the top-three in their respective heats to automatically qualify for a spot in tomorrow's quarterfinals. Twenty-four athletes moved forward with the first three from each heat plus the next six times advancing. The top-12 finishers from the quarterfinals will qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in June.

Low won Heat 5 of the men's 800m in 1:49.41, which was the seventh-best qualifying time overall. The Santa Clarita, Calif., native will be looking to repeat last year's West Prelim performance where he advanced to the national meet with a lifetime-best 1:47.52 in the quarterfinal round.

Glasgow was also an automatic qualifier after finishing second in his heat at 46.72, his second-best mark of the season. The Santa Maria, Calif., native has run a sub-47 second race in each of his last five outings. Glasgow established a lifetime-best 46.39 at the Big West Championships two weekends ago.

Junior Michael Perez-Rogers did not advance in the 400m, placing 29th overall at 47.28 seconds.

The field athletes faced some adversity in the early going with heavy rain and three lightning delays. The men's discus event was suspended in the middle of the first flight and did not resume until nearly three hours after the scheduled start time. The men's long jump and women's hammer throw also saw about a two-hour delay.

Although the men's discus was originally scheduled for a 12 p.m. (CT) start, senior Jacob Fraser, who was in the third and final flight, did not begin competition until approximately 6 p.m. (CT). He would finish 21st overall with a distance of 175-05. Classmate Victor Martin, who was in the second flight, was 35th as he hit 168-00 on his second toss of the day.

Both Martin and Fraser are also entered in the men's shot put, which is slated to begin at 6 p.m. (CT)/4 p.m. (PT) on Friday.

Junior Willie Alexander finished eight spots out of qualifying for nationals in the long jump as he placed 20th with a leap of 24-07. Alexander, who was the NCAA long jump runner-up last year, will also be competing in the triple jump on Saturday. This is the third-straight year he has qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary Championships in both events.

On the women's side, junior Marina Shelton was 41st in the hammer throw (178-11), while senior Taylor Jackson, who has been battling through an injury, was 46th in the long jump (18-01).

Senior Jasmine Askew also saw her season come to an end as she was eighth in Heat 6 and 35th overall in the 400m (54.80). It was the third time this year she cracked the 55-second mark as she ran 54.95 at the USC Trojan Invitational and a personal-record 54.55 at the Jim Bush Collegiate Challenge.

The Beach continues action at the NCAA West Prelims on Friday, May 29, at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Junior Kody Robison will get things started for LBSU in the men's hammer throw at 12 p.m. (PT), while junior Devin Hickey is the first 49er on the track in the men's 110m hurdles at 3:30 p.m. (PT).
