LONG BEACH, Calif. - Chris Mathewson continued his already impressive freshman campaign with a third Big West Pitcher of the Week honor, the Big West announced on Monday. He took home the honor for the second week in a row and won the award for the Dirtbags for the fourth week in a row.
The freshman from Fontana, Calif. lowered his Big West best ERA to 1.28 this year with eight more shutout innings in a series clinching win over UC Riverside. He struck out a season-high 10 batters in the process while not issuing a walk or hitting a batter. Only one runner reached as far as third.
Mathewson is just the seventh pitcher at Long Beach State to earn three Big West Pitcher of the Week awards in his career. He is just the fifth pitcher to claim three weekly awards in one season, joining Marcus Jones (1996), Cesar Ramos (2005), Andrew Carpenter (2006) and Jared Weaver (2003, 2004). No freshman at Long Beach State has won the award three times in the same year.
The Dirtbags have now claimed six of the 10 Big West Pitcher of the Week awards handed out this year. Mathewson has won the award three times and has made only eight starts in his young collegiate career.
