San Diego, Calif. - Long Beach State stayed aggressive against Weber State, and it paid off as the 49ers won their second game in a row, defeating the Wildcats 5-3. Leilani Tupua-Tautalatasi had two hits and scored twice, while Julia Lombardi hit a solo home run, her third of the year.
Long Beach State (12-18) took the lead on Julia Lombardi's solo home run in the third inning, and added two more in that frame to open an early advantage. Shayna Kimbrough drew a two-out walk, one of three walks on the day for the senior to start the rally. Tupua-Tautalatasi singled to put runners on the corners, and then a perfectly executed double steal brought home the second run. A single by Tobler scored Tupua-Tautalatasi, and the 49ers took a 3-0 lead.
Kimbrough and Tupua-Tautalatasi got the 49ers into another rally in similar fashion in the fifth. After a Kimbrough walk, Tupua-Tautalatasi dropped down a perfect bunt single to put two on with no outs. After the Beach loaded the bases, Darian Tautalafua singled home a pair to make the score 5-0.
Christina Clermont would improve to 10 straight innings without a hit, working the first five innings Saturday without giving up a run or a hit. Weber State ended that run with a solo home run from Alyson Kulp in the sixth inning, and the Wildcats scored a pair of unearned runs to cut the lead to 5-3. Clermont picked up an important strikeout to end the sixth, and set down the side in order in the seventh.
The sophomore finished with a career high 14 strikeouts against Weber State, and has now struck out 34 batters this weekend through three games.
Long Beach State is back in action this afternoon against Utah State at 2 p.m.
