San Diego, Calif. - Christina Clermont took another hard-luck loss Thursday, as the sophomore struck out 10 but took a 2-1 defeat in a complete game effort against BYU. The 49ers fell in their second try Saturday, losing 9-3 on the road at San Diego State.

Clermont's effort highlighted the opening game of Long Beach State's time at the San Diego Classic II. Clermont tied a season high with 10 strikeouts, but solo home runs by Gordy Bravo and Coco Tauali'i in the third inning would hold for the Cougars.

McKenna Bull took the win for BYU (14-6), giving up five hits, same as Clermont, but getting through the seventh by only allowing only one run. Hannah Cookson drew a one-out walk, and after a single by Leilani Tupua-Tautalatasi moved the freshman into scoring position, Long Beach State scored on a RBI single from LT Torres. A groundout by Darian Tautalafua ended the game, though, leaving LBSU on the short end of the score.

In game two, Long Beach State (10-18) took an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run from Haley Tobler in the first, but San Diego State (16-9) answered with four runs in the bottom of half. A leadoff single, combined with two walks and an error behind Lacey Alderman helped the Aztecs grab and early lead.

LBSU pulled back a pair in the third, as LT Torres walked to lead off the inning, and after SDSU failed to throw out the freshman on a Shayna Kimbrough grounder, Lauren Lombardi doubled to score both lefties, cutting the lead to 4-3.

The Aztecs finished off the game in the fourth, however, as Lorena Bauer hit a three-run home run with no outs, and San Diego State pushed across two more runs to take a 9-3 lead. Sydnee Cable would hold that over two scoreless innings of relief in the sixth and seventh to close out the win.

Long Beach State continues the tournament Friday, playing New Mexico State at 4:30 p.m.
