Long Beach, Calif. - Julia Lombardi singled home the go-ahead run for Long Beach State in the extra innings, but Idaho State answered with a 2-run homer from Kristen Williams and the Bengals topped Long Beach State 8-7 in eight innings.
Home runs bookended the game for Idaho State, as the Bengals (1-4) started the game with a two-run homer from Vicky Galasso, giving Idaho State a 2-run lead after the first inning.
Long Beach State (3-1) bounced back with a big inning in the third. Alexie Johnson led off the inning with a base hit, bringing up the top of the order. Kimbrough followed with a single, and then Lauren Lombardi singled to drive in a pair and tie the game. A double two batters later from Haley Tobler scored both Lombardi and Hannah Cookson to put the Beach on top 4-2.
Long Beach State added two more runs in the fourth on an RBI single from Darian Tautalafua and a sacrifice fly from Lauren Lombardi, her third RBI of the game.
The Bengals would answer back with a big inning in the sixth. Christina Clermont had settled down from giving up the dinger in the first, but ran into another jam in the sixth. Haley Breakwell singled to start the inning, and after a hit batter, a single to left brought home a run for Idaho State.
A double by Kristen Williams scored another run, and a two-run single by Michaela Taylor allowed Idaho State to tie the game at 6.
After a scoreless seventh, Long Beach State regained the lead as Hannah Cookson scored on Julia Lombardi's single on the international tiebreaker. It was shortlived, as the tiebreaker came back to haunt the 49ers, when Williams' home run landed just past Leilani Tupua-Tautalatasi, giving Idaho State the win as the designated home team.
Long Beach State finishes its first tournament of the season tomorrow, hosting Utah at 9 a.m.
