LOS ANGELES - The winning ways continued as the No. 40 Long Beach State women's tennis team swept through LMU on Friday afternoon. In its lone match of the week, the Beach (3-0) quickly swept through doubles and then took all six singles matches in straight sets.
The first match to finish set the tone for the rest of the day as Beach duo of Karolina Rozenberg and Laura Eales won 6-0 in the No. 2 slot. Ebba Unden and Hayley Thompson weren't far behind as they quickly secured the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 1. Maeva Razakasoa and Julie Gerard concluded the doubles sweep with a 6-4 win at No. 3.
The momentum carried over into the singles portion of the match as the Beach overpowered the Lions (1-4) throughout the lineup. Razakasoa rebounded from her loss last week with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win over Jessica Perez at No. 1. Gerard won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 to stay undefeated and reigning Big West Player of the Week Eales clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6.
With the match in hand, the Beach kept its foot on the gas pedal as Thompson won 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3 and Rozenberg remained unbeaten with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5. Unden's 6-4, 6-1 win over Andrea Crespo at No. 2 sealed the sweep for the Beach.
It was the first Beach sweep of the season but the third team win in a row to open the 2015 dual season. The 49ers are back at home next weekend for a Big West match with Hawai'i, which is slated to begin at 11 a.m. at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
