LONG BEACH, Calif. - A matchup of ranked teams finished in favor of the hosts as the No. 41 Long Beach State women's tennis team won 5-2 over No. 54 Hawai'i on Saturday. It was the first ranked matchup of the year for the Beach (4-0, 2-0 Big West), who kept its season-opening win streak intact.
The Beach again began the match by capturing the double point. Both the No. 2 and No. 3 duos came out on top to capture the point. Karolina Rozenberg and Laura Eales took the No. 2 match 8-2 while Maeva Razakasoa and Julie Gerard won at No. 3 by the same score.
Rozenberg and Gerard both remained unbeaten in dual matches this season with singles wins at No. 5 and No. 4 respectively. Gerard quickly dispatched Sarah Gealer with a 6-0, 6-1 win while Rozenberg defeated Paulina Petriskova 6-2, 6-4.
Ebba Unden and Hayley Thompson fell in the No. 1 doubles match but both captured singles victories to help the Beach defeat the Wahine (3-3, 1-1 Big West).
Eales saw her previously perfect record blemished for the first time this year as she dropped a three-set match at No. 6 although the third set was a 10-point tiebreaker since the match had already been decided. Razakasoa also fell in the No. 1 match 6-3, 7-5 to Cindy Nguyen.
The Beach is back in action tomorrow at the Rhodes Tennis Center when it hosts San Francisco at 11 a.m.
