LONG BEACH, Calif. - Garrett Hampson drove in three runs and Kyle Friedrichs had another double digit strikeout night as the Long Beach State Dirtbags shutout visiting Wichita State 7-0 on Friday. Friedrichs earned his third win in his third consecutive start with double digit strikeouts.
Friedrichs was strong from the beginning as he rang up seven Ks in the first three innings. Sam Tewes was equal to the task in the beginning as he retired seven of the first eight Dirtbags he faced. However, three errors helped the Dirtbags (6-3) along in the third as they put three runs on the board.
After Tristan Mercadel reached on an error and Zach Domingues was hit by a pitch, Hampson smashed a triple into right center to put the Dirtbags on the board. The Shockers relay in from the outfield sailed over third base and into the Dirtbags dugout, allowing Hampson to trot home on the play for a 3-0 lead.
Friedrichs hit a bit of a jam in the fourth as the Shockers (3-5) put two runners in scoring position, but he came out unscathed and retired the last 11 batters he faced in order. He went seven shutout innings and allowed just three hits while walking a pair.
The top of the Dirtbag lineup struck again in the seventh. Domingues singled and stole second with two outs. Hampson singled him in and Zack Rivera followed with a two-run homer to left to pad the Dirtbags lead. With two on in the eighth, Luke Rasmussen hit a pinch hit single into right to score fellow freshman Brock Lundquist from second for further insurance.
Lundquist had a standout night in his Dirtbag debut, going 3-for-4 at the plate with three singles and a stolen base.
Trey Ferketic tossed a scoreless eighth and Sean Trimble followed with a scoreless ninth to finish off the game. Both had a strikeout, running the Dirtbags strikeout total to 14 in the game.
The Dirtbags and Shockers will square off again tomorrow in the second game of a three-game series. The first pitch has been moved up to noon (rather than the original 2 p.m. start time) due to rain in the forecast.
