
Thompson's Comeback Clinches Win For Beach Tennis

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Hayley Thompson won her singles match in a third set tiebreaker to clinch the win and Long Beach State went on to defeat San Diego State 5-2 on Saturday. The Beach improved to 2-0 to start the spring season.
The match began with a Beach sweep in doubles to clinch the double point. The Aztecs (2-1) won straight set matches at Nos. 1 and 2 but the Beach countered with straight set wins at Nos. 5 and 6 to close in on the team win. Thompson went to a third set at No. 3 and Julie Gerard was in a third set at No. 4.
Thompson dropped her first set but rallied to win the second set before trading games in the third. Finally, it was Thompson who came out on top with the 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) win to clinch the match for the Beach.
Gerard continued her battle with Jana Buth as the two traded tiebreaking sets to send it into a third. Gerard was able to hold off Buth in the third with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (6-8), 6-4 win. Previously, Karolina Rozenberg won at No. 5 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 and Laura Eales won at No. 6 6-3, 7-5.
Kristin Buth took the No. 1 match for SDSU 6-5, 6-3 over Maeva Razakasoa while Ebba Unden fell 7-5, 6-2 to Tami Nguyen at No. 2.
In the Beach sweep of doubles Unden and Thompson won 6-4 at No. 1, Rozenberg and Eales took the No. 2 match 6-4 and Razakasoa and Gerard breezed to a 6-2 win.
Long Beach State is back on the road next week with a Friday match at LMU.
