Demirjian Claims Big West Title in Decathlon

DAVIS, Calif. - Senior Garrett Demirjian claimed the Big West title in the decathlon Saturday at UC Davis' Toomey Field & Woody Wilson Track.
Demirjian, who was the runner-up in 2013, finished ahead of the pack with 7,014 points. He is the fifth 49er to win the Big West decathlon and first since Nicholas Armstrong in 2011.
On Saturday, Demirjian took second in the 110-meter hurdles (14.98), discus (132-03) and 1500m (4:40.78). He also tied for fourth in the pole vault (13-05), while placing fifth in the javelin with a lifetime-best 164-04. On Friday, Demirjian tied for first in the high jump and was the runner-up in the 400m. In addition, he took third in the long jump, tied for third in the shot put and was fifth in the 100m.
Junior Cameron Pizzica also scored in the decathlon as he finished seventh overall. He closed out the two-day event with a runner-up showing in the pole vault where he cleared a season-best 14-00.75. Pizzica was also seventh in the 100m hurdles (16.53) and javelin (144-08), ninth in the discus and 10th in the 1500m.
Freshman Jordan Agnew finished two spots out of scoring position as she came in 10th in the women's heptathlon. Agnew placed fourth in the long jump (17-11.75), sixth in the javelin (104-00) and ninth in the 800m (2:32.33).
Long Beach State will continue the Big West Championships next weekend with the main events set for May 16-17 at Toomey Field & Woody Wilson Track on the campus of UC Davis.
