49ers Earn Sweep at Riverside City College Quad Meet

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Long Beach State track & field team opened the 2014 outdoor season with 23 individual victories at the Riverside City College Quad Meet on Saturday, March 8.
The 49ers also picked up team wins over host RCC, Cal State Fullerton and Pepperdine as they compiled 104 points in the women's competition and 63.5 points in the men's events.
Fatima Vergara led the women with a first-place finish in the hammer throw. She recorded the third-best mark in school history at 181-03. Marina Shelton was also the runner-up at 180-07, which ranks fourth among the program's all-time top-10.
Linda Rueff added a victory in the discus (144-11), while Melanie Samvalian did the same in the shot put (45-08). In addition, Tiffany Forbito finished ahead of the pack in the javelin (139-11). Forbito's mark is No. 9 in the LBSU record books.
In other field events, Kayla Kamaka was the pole vault champion, clearing 12-02, and Jordan Agnew claimed the long jump title with a leap of 17-02.
On the track, Kayla Goosby swept the 100m (12.21) and 200m (24.80), while Emily Cooper (56.83) and Alex Kruthers (56.87) combined for a one-two finish in the 400m.
Jacob Fraser paced the men with a lifetime-best 57-02.75 in the shot put, which ranks ninth in school history. He also came in second in the discus (161-06), behind teammate Jason Harrell (177-01). Kody Robison contributed a victory in the hammer throw at 189-06, and took third in the javelin at 159-08.
Willie Alexander picked up two wins on Saturday as he posted the top marks in both the long jump (24-07.75) and triple jump (47-08), while Conner Rouse took first in the pole vault (15-09).
Michael Perez-Rogers won the 400m with a time of 48.11 seconds, and placed third in the 200m (21.51). Devin Hickey and Koree Hines were the top two finishers in the 110m hurdles at 14.49 and 14.64 seconds, respectively.
Long Beach State is back in action this week as it heads to Orange County for two different meets. The 49ers are set to compete in the Ben Brown Invitational at Cal State Fullerton on Friday, March 14, and the Anteater Invitational at UC Irvine on Saturday, March 15.
