Martinez Ties For 21st At Peg Barnard Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. - Long Beach State sophomore Shawnee Martinez shot a 74 in the final round of the Peg Barnard Invitational on Sunday to tie for 21st place at Stanford Golf Course.

LBSU tied for 10th with its Black & Blue Rival UC Irvine as both teams completed the two-day, 36-hole tournament at 37-over-par 605.

The 49ers recorded a one-shot improvement from its opening round of 303 to finish ahead of Oregon State (12th) by three strokes, Fresno State (13th) by six shots and San Francisco (14th) by nine strokes. LBSU finished just one shot behind No. 42 Denver (ninth), two strokes behind No. 50 Colorado (eighth) and three shots behind No. 38 San Diego State (seventh).

Tournament host and No. 9 Stanford captured the team title for the second consecutive year as the Cardinal finished with a 2-over 570, winning by a comfortable 16 shots over fellow Big West Conference member No. 37 UC Davis (+18) in second.

Forty-seventh ranked UNLV finished in third at 24-over, followed by No. 28 California (+27) in fourth and No. 16 Oregon (+28) rounded out the top-five.

Martinez jumped in the standings after tying for 21st with an opening round 76 to finish with a 36-hole score of 8-over 150.

The native from Modesto started her round from the 13th hole and posted two bogeys on the par-3 14th and 17th to go 2-over on her first six holes. After making the turn onto the front-nine, Martinez recorded her first birdie of the day on the par-5 first to go 1-over. She would go onto card her only bogey on the front-nine on the par-3 third and her second birdie of the round at the par-3 eighth. Martinez carded two more bogeys on the 10th and 12th holes to finish the day at 3-over.

Junior Chaewon Park turned in a 76 to finish tied for 28th with a 9-over, while sophomore Kassidy Teare carded a one-shot improvement with a 77 to tie for 47th at 13-over.

After leading for the 49ers on the first day of competition and recording a career-low 74, sophomore Janelle Sua ran into trouble in the final 18-holes, shooting an 84 to drop in the standings from 17th to tie for 63rd at 16-over.

Ashley Greer posted a 10-shot improvement with a 75 to place 66th at 18-over.

UNLV's Dana Finkelstein captured individual medalist honors with a 5-under 137, winning by two shots over two players from Stanford tied for second.

LBSU returns to action Feb. 24-25, traveling down to Santa Ana for the UC Irvine Invitational presented by KIA at the Santa Ana Country Club.
