Martinez Charges Through Second Round At UC Irvine Invitational

SANTA ANA, Calif. - Sophomore Shawnee Martinez tied a career-low 69 in the second round of the UC Irvine Invitational presented by Kia to tie for 12th place and lead the Long Beach State women's golf team to fifth at the Santa Ana Country Club.

Martinez tied for 54th after posting an opening round 80 as she collected eight bogeys and 10 pars. The Modesto native stormed back in the afternoon round on her first hole on the par 3 13th, recording her first of six birdies. Martinez would go 1-under though her next six holes until she picked up her second birdie for the round on the par-3 No. 2 to go 2-under. After picking up two bogeys on the next three holes to go even, she would post four birdies on the next five holes to go 3-under.

Martinez was one of four players to record a 69 for the tournament's lowest score of the day.

LBSU has a 36-hole score of 28-over 604 after the 49ers posted an opening round s 306 to tie for sixth with tournament host UC Irvine. LBSU recorded an eight shot improvement in the second round for a 298 and hold a three-stroke lead over No. 33 UC Davis (+31) in sixth.

Eighth-ranked Stanford (+2) leads the field of 13 teams by 10 shots over No. 37 Texas A&M (+12) in second and 14 strokes over No. 16 Pepperdine (+16) in third. Gonzaga sits in fourth (+22) with a four shot lead over the 49ers.

Sophomore Kassidy Teare is one shot behind with a 6-over 150, tied for 15th. Teare posted an even-72 to tie for fourth after the first round with three birdies and 12 pars.

Sophomore Janelle Sua shot a 78 to tie for 42nd and came back to improve by four strokes in the second round for a 74 to tie for 20th at 8-over.

Junior Chaewon Park tied for 24th at 9-over after posting rounds of 76 and 77.

Junior Ashley Greer tied for 62nd at 18-over with rounds of 83 and 79.

Senior Rochelle Chan (+11) and freshman Sachi Hamada (+18) played as individuals, tied for 34th and 62nd respectively. Chan posted an opening round 74 to tie for eighth, but struggled in the afternoon round shooting an 81. Hamada, playing only in her second collegiate tournament, recorded an 83 in the first round and came back with a four shot improvement for a 79.

The Cardinal's Mariah Stackhouse (-5) leads the field of 68 players by three strokes over Savannah Vilaubi of UC Riverside.

Final round play concludes on Tuesday, with the 49ers teeing off at 7:45 a.m. from the first tee and will be paired with the Bulldogs and Aggies.
