49ers Drop Series Opener at Hawai'i 7-4

Facing the No. 14 team in the nation, the Long Beach State softball team (30-20, 12-7) dropped its series opener against Hawai'i (38-8, 15-1) in Honolulu on Friday night, falling by a score of 7-4.

After three quick 49er outs, Hawai'i was able to open of the bottom of the inning with a triple and was then able to score after an error by Ashley Holmes at first base brought in a Wahine run. They were then able to tack on two more runs in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 3-0. The 49ers were able to get some offense going in the top of the fourth as Shayna Kimbrough hit a single to get on base. Two outs followed, but after a single by Darian Tautalafua, Kimbrough was able to score the first 49er run of the game to cut the Hawai'i lead to 3-1.

Hansen walked two batters in the bottom of the fourth to put runners on base for the Warriors. After a single, the Wahine were able to score another run, and then tacked on one more after a throwing error by Nalani St. Germain. Hawai'I then hit a two-run homer to extend its lead to 7-1. After another single and a double by Hawai'i, Christian Carbajal came in to replace Hansen in the circle. Carbajal then hit the batter to load the bases for Hawai'i, but no run would score after a line out ended the inning.

In the top of the fifth, the 49ers got their offense going after a bunt single by Kimbough was followed by a single by Leilani Tupua-Tautalatasi to put runners on first and third. Hannah De Gaetano then grounded into a double play, but Kimbrough was able to score to close Hawai'i's lead to 7-2.

Down to their final inning, the 49ers were able to tack on two more runs as Holmes hit her seventh home run of the season to bring LBSU within 7-4, but the 49ers would come no closer as the game would end in Hawai'i's favor.
