49ers begin action at UC Irvine Spring Break Invitational

IRVINE, Calif. - The Long Beach State track and field team kicked off the 2012 UC Irvine Spring Break Invitational with the hammer throw, 3000m steeplechase and 5000m Friday evening at Anteater Stadium.
Chris Yates led the LBSU men in his first hammer competition of the season. Yates finished fifth overall with a personal-record 182-01. Josh Villalobos also notched a season-best 176-11 to come in sixth, while Jacob Fraser was seventh (159-08).
On the track, Steven DeCastro took fifth in the 3000m steeplechase, crossing the finish line in 9:22.61.
Jared Long was the 49ers' top finisher in the 5000m as he clocked in with a lifetime-best 15:33.37 for a 10th-place showing. Timothy Bergstrom was right behind him in 11th (15:37.81).
On the women's side, Shari Harris was sixth overall in the women's hammer throw with a distance of 168-03, while Alexandra Cervantes came in ninth (151-05).
Kelsea Tiapon established Long Beach State's sixth-fastest time in the 3000m steeplechase at 11:39.39. Madison D'Ornellas also registered a mark of 11:40.12 which ranks eighth on the 49er all-time charts.
Long Beach State continues action at the UCI Spring Break Invitational tomorrow. The field events get underway at 10:30 a.m., while the track events start at noon.
