LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State men's golf team will look to improve for the 2011-2012 season under second-year head coach Ryan Ressa as the 49ers prepare for a competitive schedule against some of the best teams in the nation.
The 49ers return five letterwinners from last year's squad that captured its first tournament victory since winning the 2004 Big West Conference Championship.
LBSU will compete in three tournaments in the fall beginning with the Husky Invitational (Oct. 2-3) at the Gold Mountain Golf Complex in Bremerton, Wash. The 49ers will once again take part in The Prestige at PGA WEST in La Quinta on Oct. 9-11. The Gifford Collegiate Championship (Oct. 31-Nov. 2) will serve as the last tournament of the fall season for the 49ers as they travel up to the CordeValle Resort in San Martin.
"I really like the way this year's schedule has come together," Ressa said. "I am a big believer in a light fall schedule, allowing each of our players to work on transitioning back into the classroom. Along with that, we are able to work with the new players on wiring their routines for the championship season."
Along with the three tournaments scheduled for the fall, Ressa has also scheduled a total of four individual events for the 49ers this year, three of those tournaments taking place during the fall.
"This fall we have added individual events on the off weeks, allowing our entire lineup the opportunity to compete in tournaments," Ressa said. "I believe competition is truly the best way to test your game. Each member of our team is allowed 24 days of competition each year and I want to maximize those opportunities for my players. This year we have added four individual events to our schedule."
The spring portion of the schedule features eight tournaments for LBSU and one individual event. The 49ers will start the season at the Folino Invitational (Feb. 19-21) hosted by Cal State Fullerton at the Industry Hills Golf Club. At the end of February, LBSU will host the Del Walker Match Play Championship at Virginia Country Club in Long Beach. This year's Del Walker will feature eight teams in the new tournament format.
In March, the 49ers are set to play in three tournaments traveling to Central California for the Fresno State Lexus Golf Classic (Mar. 5-6), the Bandon Dunes Championship (Mar. 16-18) hosted by Gonzaga and the Duck Invitational (Mar. 26-27) hosted by Oregon.
In the last month of the season, LBSU will travel to Santa Barbara for the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate (Apr. 2-3), the Anteater Invitational (Apr. 23-24) and the Big West Conference Championship (Apr. 29-May 1). This year's Big West Championship will be held at the La Quinta Resort Mountain Course in La Quinta after being at the Mission Viejo Country Club since 2009.
"Again this year we are competing against some of the nation's top programs," stated Ressa. "There is no doubt that this year's schedule will be one of the toughest schedules in the country."
"We are playing some great golf courses highlighted by the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain (Husky Invite), Corde Valle (Gifford Collegiate), Eugene Country Club (Duck Invite) and Pacific Trails at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (Gonzaga Invite)."
"This year's schedule will be very competitive allowing us an opportunity to qualify for an at-large bid into the postseason if we play well. I am excited for the guys to go out and compete on some of the best courses in the country against the nation's top players."
