LONG BEACH, Calif. - Freshman Sarah Carrasco has been named the Big West Conference Player of the Week after leading Long Beach State to a 2-1 record last weekend at Cal Poly.
Carrasco (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) hit .600 against the Mustangs going 6-for-10 at the plate with a .900 slugging percentage. She had three doubles in the series, including one in the top of the seventh inning that led to the winning run in a 3-2 decision in the series opener on Friday. She opened the series going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a RBI and a run scored in the 3-2 win. She followed in the second game of the doubleheader with a 1-for-3 effort with two RBI and a run scored in a 7-1 win. In Saturday's 5-4 eight-inning loss, Carrasco went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored.
The 49er designated player leads Long Beach State in hitting (.343), while ranking 10th in the Big West Conference. On the season, she has two home runs, seven doubles and a .475 slugging percentage. In Big West Conference games, she is seventh in the league in hitting with a .414 average. She is also third in slugging percentage (.655), and 10th in both on base percentage (.471) and RBI (8).
Carrasco's player of the week honor is the first of her career and the third of the season for the 49ers. Megan Denio and Nalani St. Germain have each won the award earlier this season. Long Beach State has also earned six Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week honors, with freshman Erin Jones-Wesley winning five and senior Brooke Turner claiming one.
Carrasco and the 49ers return to action this weekend when LBSU hosts UC Santa Barbara in a crucial three-game series at the 49er Softball Complex. The 49ers and Gauchos, who are tied for third place one game behind the league leaders, play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday. Action both days starts at 1 p.m.
