49ers win Folino Invitational team title

IRVINE, Calif. - The Long Beach State women's golf team shot a 300 in Tuesday's final round of the inaugural eight-team Folino Invitational to win the team title by four strokes over second-place UC Irvine.
This was the first tournament victory for LBSU since winning the Big West Conference tournament in 2009.
LBSU improved by six shots from Monday's opening round at the Oak Creek Golf Club in Irvine, finishing the 36-hole tournament with a total score of 606 (+30).
Portland State (+35) placed third, finishing one shot behind LBSU, followed by Cal Poly (+59) in fourth and tournament host Cal State Fullerton in fifth (+59).
Sophomore Simone Hoey was the top player for LBSU, shooting a final round 76 for a 4-over 148, finishing in a three-way tie for second. Hoey finished four strokes behind individual medalist Lauren Taylor of Portland State.
Senior Reina Rogers recorded her best performance of the year, tying a tournament low 70 to move up in the standings from 19th to finish in sixth. Rogers improved by 10 shots from Monday's opening round, carding five birdies and three bogeys in Tuesday's final round. Rogers finished the tournament with a 6-over 150.
Junior Monica Villarreal carded a 75 to move up from 13th to tie for eighth with a 9-over 153. Senior Lindsey McAtee, playing as an individual, shot a 77 to finish in 13th for a 12-over 156.
Freshman Rochelle Chan tied for 15th, shooting a 79 to finish at 14-over, followed by junior Noelle Zavaleta carding an 84 to tie for 23rd.
"I'm so proud of this team," 49er head coach Joey Cerulle said. "The win today is the culmination of some excellent practices and having a strong game plan. I look for this win to just be the jumpstart we need to finish our spring season with a few more victories."
"I'm proud of the work that Simone has put in this year," Cerulle remarked. "She is dialed in and the sky is the limit for how well she is playing right now."
The 49ers return to action on Monday, Mar. 28, returning to Orange County for the Anteater Invitational hosted by UC Irvine.
