LONG BEACH, Calif. - Freshman Erin Jones-Wesley has been named the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week after going 2-1, including a win over No. 6 Oklahoma, in last weekend's Cathedral City Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. The player of the week honor is the second this season for Jones-Wesley.
Jones-Wesley (Alta Loma, Calif./Los Osos HS) beat Utah 5-1 in eight innings on Thursday, Feb. 24, before handing the nationally-ranked Sooners a 2-1 loss on Friday, Feb. 25. The freshman held Utah scoreless through seven innings in the 49ers win before allowing an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning after LBSU had scored five runs in the top of the eighth. Against Oklahoma, Jones-Wesley pitched a complete game scattering six hits and striking out six. For the week, she pitched 21 innings, allowing just seven runs (six earned), while striking out 16. She suffered her first career loss at the hands of No. 21 Oklahoma State on Saturday, Feb. 26, when she allowed five runs in a 5-3 loss. She finished the week with a 2.00 ERA.
Long Beach State travels to San Diego this weekend where the 49ers will play BYU and San Diego State on Thursday, Houston on Friday, and Fresno State and Baylor on Saturday.
