
49ers fall in first match at UC Irvine Invitational

Irvine, Calif. - Long Beach State had a strong defensive first half against No. 6 Loyola Marymount, but the 49ers were unable to get on the board early and ultimately lost to the Lions 9-5 in the team's first of four games at the UCI Invitational.
Long Beach State limited the Lions offense to just three goals in the first half, but were shutout over the same period as the Lions headed into the break with a 3-0 lead.
The 49ers offense came alive in the third period by scoring four goals, but they were matched by the Lions who also had four goals in the period to maintain their advantage.
Long Beach State added a goal in the final period, while the Lions scored two to account for the final tally.
Meaghan Leonard tied a career-high with three goals to lead the 49ers, while Krizia Cerda extended her goal-scoring streak to four games.
Long Beach State plays once more today, facing No. 17 UC Davis at 5:45 p.m. in the final match of the day.
