Long Beach, Calif. - Fresh off a win in the morning, the 49ers turned to Erin Jones-Wesley in her first collegiate start, and the freshman delivered with a 2-0 shutout of Boise State. Jones-Wesley allowed just three hits and struck out eight in the complete game.
The 49ers grabbed an early lead, and that would be all that Jones-Wesley would need to seal the sweep on the day. Bree Stephan led off the game with a single, and after stealing second, she moved to third on a sacrifice. A single by Caitrin DeBaun brought home Stephan and the 49ers had a 1-0 lead.
Long Beach State added one insurance run in the fifth inning, courtesy of some wildness from Bronco reliever Morgan Barnes in her lone inning of work. Barnes walked Stephan to start the inning, and after moving to second, a De Gaetano grounder moved Stephan to third, where she would score on a wild pitch.
From there, Jones-Wesley retired the last six batters in order to complete the game and pick up the first win of her career. Stephan finished the game going 1-for-3 with two runs scored for the 49ers.
Long Beach State defeated LMU 5-3 in the first game of the day, while Boise State outlasted the Lions in the neutral game 2-1. The three teams will reprise their slate from today on Sunday with a trio of games, starting with Long Beach State hosting Boise State at 9 a.m.
