49er women's basketball falls at UC Irvine, 77-59

IRVINE, Calif. - The Long Beach State women's basketball team was unable to slow down UC Irvine's offense in a 77-59 loss Saturday evening at the Bren Events Center.
The Anteaters (11-4, 3-0 Big West) shot an impressive 53.8 percent from the field and were even better from 3-point range at 55.0 percent. The 49ers, meanwhile, posted a 49.0 field goal percentage and went 3-for-14 (21.4 percent) from beyond the arc. UCI also outrebounded LBSU, 33-25.
Junior Tipesa Moorer paced The Beach with a team-high 14 points, 12 of which came in the second half. Senior Courtney Jacob also finished with 12 points, four rebounds, four assists and two blocks, while freshman Brandi Henton had 11 points.
UCI raced out to a 13-0 advantage following a 3-pointer by Jade Smith-Williams. LBSU eventually got on the board at the 14:37 mark with a Tipesa Moorer layup, but the Anteaters proceeded to take a 23-7 lead. The 49ers then used an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 10 with 7:40 remaining.
Long Beach State (3-14, 1-3 BWC) stayed within striking distance, trailing 33-23 with 2:03 remaining, but UCI went on to score six unanswered points before the buzzer to hold a 39-23 cushion at the break.
The 49ers shot 40.0 percent from the field, but were just 1-of-10 from 3-point range in the first half. Jacob paced LBSU with seven points.
The Anteaters opened the second period on a 12-7 run to take their largest lead of the game at 51-30 with 16:15 on the clock. The 49ers were unable to recover from there as UCI cruised to the 77-59 win.
Mikah Maly-Karros led UC Irvine with a game-high 25 points and 11 rebounds. Jacquelyn Marshall and Smith-Williams also finished with 16 points apiece.
Long Beach State continues its four-game road stretch next week when it travels north for Big West games at UC Davis (Jan. 13) and Pacific (Jan. 15).
