Berkeley, Calif. - In her collegiate debut, Klaudia Malenovska came through with a big victory at the Cal NIKE Invitational, taking down #32 Micaela Hein of Arizona State 6-2, 6-3, defeating the No. 2 seed at the tournament. That win highlighted a day that saw all seven 49ers advance to the round of 16 in their respective flights.
Malenovska's win over Hein was just the first win for the sophomore on the day, as she then advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Nevada's Emma Verbenne. Also in gold singles, Jaklin Alawi defeated Santa Clara's Kacie Wagner 6-2, 6-2 before falling to #54 Kelcy McKenna. Anais Dallara was the third 49er to reach the round of 16 in that flight, beating USC's Lyndsay Kinstler 6-2, 6-3 before losing to #87 Alex Poorta of Saint Mary's 6-3, 6-1.
Armstrong, seeded at the top of the blue singles draw, held form on the day with two quick victories, beating Maggie McGeorge of Santa Clara 6-2, 6-4 before downing Susan McRann of Arizona 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals.
The rest of the 49ers also competed in the blue flight. Julie Luzar picked up a win over Anna Guzman 6-2, 6-2 before falling in the round of 16, and Sarah Cantlay advanced via walkover but lost in the round of 16 to Nevada's Florence DeVrye 6-3, 6-3.
