Los Angeles, Calif. - Setter Ashley Lee had eight kills, eight digs, three blocks and 29 assists, guiding the way as Long Beach State rolled to a 25-18, 25-16, 25-23 victory on the road at Loyola Marymount Friday night. Caitlin Ledoux led the 49ers in kills with 15.
Long Beach State was in control throughout against the Lions on Friday night, led by a masterful performance from Lee who was two kills and two digs shy of a triple-double in just three sets. Lee guided the 49ers to .337 hitting led by Ledoux who finished with 15 kills on .353 hitting and Michelle Osunbor, who had six kills on 11 attacks, hitting .545.
The 49ers also had nine blocks, as the 49ers held LMU to .144 hitting on the night, including a .000 hitting percentage in each of the first two sets.
Long Beach State never trailed in the first set, opening up a 6-2 lead and pushing out to a 13-7 lead behind five kills from Ledoux, forcing the Lions to burn both of their timeouts in the early portion of the set. A block by Jasmine Rankins and Kenna Crouse helped the Lions cut the 49er lead to two at 15-13, but the 49ers responded by taking the next four points. With a 19-13 lead, the 49ers held that cushion the rest of the way to grab the opener 25-18.
Even more impressive was the start for the 49ers in set two. After forcing a sideout on the first point, Long Beach State scored the next eight points on serve to take a 9-0 lead in the second set, making eight kills on ten attacks over that stretch. The 49ers held even the rest of the way to cruise to a 25-16 win in set two.
The final set was the closest of the three, as the Lions took their first lead of the match and held it until 5-3. The 49ers then scored two straight to tie the set, and took the lead at 7-6 with an Osunbor kill. The set remained close the rest of the way, but the 49ers never again lost the lead, scoring two straight points at 23-23 to finish out the match with a final kill by Lee at 25-23.
Long Beach State begins conference play this Saturday, when the 49ers host Cal State Fullerton at the Walter Pyramid. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
