Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State water polo has filled the open position in its coaching staff with the addition of Liz Grimes. Grimes will assist with both the men's and women's programs over the course of the year.
Grimes has a long history of working in sports administration as well as extensive background in water polo. She comes to the Beach from USA Water Polo, where she was the Associate Director of Sport Development, a national position working on sport growth as well as policy. She also has prior coaching experience at the Division I level, working as an assistant water polo coach at Harvard.
"We're very excited to welcome back Liz, as she's a former 49er," said head water polo coach Gavin Arroyo. "She brings a high level of professionalism, and her extended involvement with USA Water Polo brings a lot to the staff."
In addition to her work with USA Water Polo, Grimes has also worked in an administrative capacity for a number of FINA world championship events, including the 2009 Women's World League preliminaries and the 2007 Men's Junior World Championships. She has also worked at the last two Summer Olympic Games, spending the 2008 Beijing Olympics as a water polo commentator for NBCOlympics.com, providing both written and visual content for the site.
Before her work in water polo, Grimes worked for Major League Baseball, where she was a technical assistant for the MLB's online credentialing service, and then served as the credential manager for the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006.
Grimes replaces Heather Moody, who departed Long Beach State to take over as the head coach for the USA women's junior national team and assistant coach for Team USA.
