LBSU women's hoops drops 82-56 decision at Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. - Facing its fifth Pac-10 opponent of the season, the Long Beach State women's basketball team was unable to get a different result as it fell to California, 82-56, in front of 1,189 fans Saturday afternoon at Haas Pavilion.
The Beach (1-10) shot the ball well as it posted a 41.7 field goal percentage, but was outrebounded, 46-31. The Golden Bears finished with 21 offensive boards.
Senior Courtney Jacob led the 49ers with a team-high 18 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Amanda Sims chipped in 11 points on a 5-for-5 performance from the field, while junior Tipesa Moorer finished with eight points.
Cal (6-2) took an early 5-0 advantage before a layup by Sims got LBSU on the board at the 18:07 mark. The Beach then used a 6-2 run to cut the deficit to two at 12-10 with 13:28 remaining. Although they were unable to pull ahead, the 49ers stayed within striking distance until the Bears went on a 12-5 spurt to go up by 11. Cal eventually scored the last four points of the half to hold a 38-24 cushion at the break.
The Beach outshot California in the first period, but was outrebounded, 25-17. Fifteen of Cal's boards came on the offensive end. Sims led LBSU with nine points.
The 49ers scored on their first possession of the second period as Moorer's layup at the 19:29 mark made it 38-26, but California then went on a 14-4 run to put the game out of reach as the Bears took a 52-30 advantage with 15:57 on the clock. Cal went up by as many as 30 en route to the 82-56 victory.
DeNesha Stallworth paced the Bears with 27 points, while Talia Caldwell finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Long Beach State has a week layoff before it returns to action when it hosts the Beach Classic Presented by Hotel Maya, Dec. 19-21. The 49ers are set to take on Florida A&M on Sunday (Dec. 19) at 2 p.m.
