Long Beach, Calif. - Former Dirtbag Evan Longoria won his second American League Gold Glove award, given to the top defensive player at his position in each league.
Longoria, who last year became the first former Long Beach State player to win major league baseball's top defensive honor, backed up his selection with another outstanding defensive season, filled with spectacular plays as well as solid fundamentals, leading all AL third basemen with 43 double plays. His .970 fielding percentage and 302 assists were both second-best in the American League as well.
Only two third basemen ever have won two gold gloves at a younger age than Longoria: Brooks Robinson and Eric Chavez.
Votes for the award are received from each major league manager, who cannot vote for their own players.
